Edinburgh Evening News *** - 2000: A Millennium Measure of Measure for Measure

Date Published: 8 August 2000

It’s a tongue-twister title – but this contemporary update manages to capture the essence of Shakespeare’s original whilst lending it a glossy modern resonance.

The action is relocated to a management consultancy where the Duke – now an MD – crucially fails to provide strong leadership for his staff.

Slick suits, cool shades, laptop and mobile are the currency of the day in a soulless environment where sex and power go hand in hand. But there’s room for humour too – the Duke’s plan of action being converted into inspirational bullet points neatly itemised on scree

“Making a window into men’s souls” a huge X-ray eye dominates the set, putting the characters’ conscience under scrutiny and finding them wanting. Nice twist – but the fact that some of the acting is under par undermines an otherwise invigorating production.
