Siege Perilous is a theatre production company championing new writing. Its 360° mentoring programme for talented, emerging playwrights culminates with the opportunity for their previously unseen work to be professionally staged. Unsolicited scripts are also welcome.
There are simply not enough avenues open to emerging playwrights to get their work produced. This results in a hoard of scripts, many of which in our opinion are of very high quality, that the public have never had a chance to see performed, and actors never had the chance to perform in.
As well as producing new work, we like to stage contemporary adaptations of classic texts.
The company seeks to make theatre more widely accessible to audiences by performing in non-conventional spaces. It has performed at an historical castle, a nightclub, a bar and a 6,000 sq ft empty retail unit. During a 2-year residency at the GRV (now The Store), it staged 8 well-received productions. It has appeared at Edinburgh’s Festival Fringe four times and completed a UK tour. Its open air production at Craigcrook Castle was produced in association with the de Marco European Art Foundation.
The company is happy to offer mentoring opportunities to those interested in developing a career in the industry in roles such as Assistant Director, Stage Manager, Wardrobe, Technical crew and newly graduated actors. It has been hugely exciting for us to involve school children and young people in our work, to see them explore their own inventiveness and imagination, and learn their craft from watching professional performers through the creative process. We ourselves have learned so much from them.
Underpinning its activities, the company upholds professionalism, a commercial outlook and ongoing development of good practice. The company received an Arts & Business award in 2010.
To progress the company will seek opportunities to tour successful productions, and collaborate with other companies and venues.
In short, the role of Siege Perilous is to:
- Help emerging playwrights develop their skills and provide a platform to stage their work
- Offer mentoring to those wishing to develop a career in the industry
- Perform in unusual spaces and venues
- Operate the Company and discharge our duties with all consideration and respect for those with whom we work, and those who support us.
